Forschungsinteressen
My research focuses on precision interferometry and polarimetry for fundamental physics. I develop laboratory experiments targeting three connected areas: light dark matter and axion-like particles, vacuum magnetic birefringence predicted by quantum electrodynamics, and high-frequency gravitational waves. This work combines high-finesse optical cavities, precision polarimetry, heterodyne interferometry, low-noise optical readout and laser stabilization, with links to astrophysics and cosmology.
Vita
I am an experimental physicist and Group Leader at the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (Albert Einstein Institute) in Hannover and the Institute for Gravitational Physics at Leibniz University Hannover. I lead the Fundamental Interactions research group within the department of Precision Interferometry and Fundamental Interactions.
My group develops precision optical experiments to search for new physics. Our programme focuses on light dark matter and axion-like particles, vacuum magnetic birefringence predicted by quantum electrodynamics, and concepts for detecting high-frequency gravitational waves. We develop high-finesse optical cavities, precision polarimetry, heterodyne interferometry, low-noise readout, laser stabilization and advanced optical metrology.
Before joining AEI, I worked at Cardiff University on co-located interferometers for quantum space-time, dark-matter and high-frequency gravitational-wave searches. I previously contributed to Advanced LIGO readout electronics and to the PVLAS experiment at the University of Ferrara, where I received my PhD. I supervise doctoral and master’s students and contribute to international collaborations, including ALPS II.
