My research focuses on the physics of relativistic outflows, including
the jets, ejecta, and blast waves produced during the formation of
neutron stars and black holes, as well as in mergers involving neutron
stars, and on the transient electromagnetic emission
they generate. A central part of my work concerns the fundamental
theory of relativistic blast waves: their self-similar evolution, causal
structure, and the physical mechanisms that determine which solutions
emerge dynamically. I investigate these questions
through a combination of theoretical analysis and high-resolution
numerical simulations. In parallel, I develop analytic and semi-analytic
models of the dynamics and radiation of relativistic and mildly
relativistic outflows, benchmark them against detailed
numerical calculations, and use them to infer the properties of the
ejecta and central engine from observations of gamma-ray bursts,
kilonovae, and broadband afterglows, with particular emphasis on
multimessenger events such as GW170817. More broadly, I am
interested in compact-binary populations, particularly their merger
rates and the constraints placed on them by the Galactic binary-pulsar
population and the observed rate of short gamma-ray bursts.
