AEI researcher honored with award for outstanding scientific achievements, social commitment, and university activities.

January 12, 2021

Dr. Marina Trad Nery, researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics and post-doc in the Cluster of Excellence “Quantum Frontiers” receives the 2020 award of the Leibniz Universitätsgesellschaft e. V. Her outstanding research in the field of quantum optomechanics with promising applications in third-generation gravitational-wave detectors such as the Einstein telescope are just one of the reasons for the award. It also takes into account the awardee’s involvement in the EU-funded Marie Curie International Training Network “GraWiToN”, which supported her PhD studies at the institute and at the Leibniz University with a fellowship.

“I am very happy about this unexpected award for my work and commitment”, says Marina Trad Nery. “During my PhD, I was able to witness the birth of gravitational-wave astronomy. Now I'm very excited about what the next few years will bring us in this rapidly growing field, and I can't wait to make my contributions.”

The awardee

Marina Trad Nery is from Brazil and studied physics there at the University of Campinas. For her PhD studies, she came to the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics and Leibniz Universität Hannover in early 2015 with a fellowship from the Marie Curie International Training Network “GraWiToN”. There, her research included power stabilization of high-power lasers and their fundamental limitations, which will play a role in future gravitational-wave detectors. She also spent several months at the Virgo gravitational-wave detector in Italy, working on improvements to the instrument between two observing runs. Since October 2020, she works as a researcher in the group “Advanced Light Sources” in the Cluster of Excellence “Quantum Frontiers”.

University awards for international students and doctoral candidates

Every year, the President of Leibniz University Hannover, through the University Office for International Affairs, awards four prizes to international students who have distinguished themselves not only through outstanding academic achievements, but also through special social commitment and activities within the university. The prize of the Leibniz Universitätsgesellschaft e. V. for Dr. Marina Trad Nery is endowed with 500 €.
