What happened before the Big Bang?

Was the Big Bang not the beginning of everything, but one of the many events in the history of our universe? There are indications for this thesis in the cosmic background radiation. Investigations of this microwave radiation are becoming more and more precise. Scientists are gaining an ever more detailed insight into the early ages of the universe through the tiny temperature fluctuations measured by the ESA's Planck satellite.

But if the Big Bang was not the beginning, what was before? What could trigger the Big Bang, and how can we find out? Do we live in a unique universe, or are there many different ones, in other words a "multiverse"? Jean-Luc Lehners reports on the current findings of cosmological research and combines them with the predictions of the string theory.
