Outstanding young scientist uses prize money for research stay at the Albert Einstein Institute
The only 27-year-old physicist Dr. Yanbei Chen receives the Sofja Kovalevskaja Prize worth 900,000 euros.
He will use his prize money to establish a research group at the Albert Einstein Institute and work in the following areas:
- Data analysis strategies for the evaluation of data from earth- and space-borne gravitational wave detectors
- physics of gravitational wave sources and
- General relativity research
Yanbei Chen will cooperate in particular with the departments “Astrophysical Theory of Relativity” of Prof. Dr. Bernard Schutz and “Laser Interferometry and Gravitational Wave Astronomy” of Prof. Dr. Karsten Danzmann.
Yanbei Chen
born in China in 1977, studied at the University of Beijing (China) and at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California (USA), where he received his doctorate in 2004 and was last employed.

The Sofja Kovalevskaja Prize
The prize enables successful top young scientists from abroad to carry out research of their own choice at research institutions in Germany and to establish corresponding working groups. Largely unburdened by administrative constraints, the award winners should be able to concentrate on their high-ranking and innovative research and thus strengthen the internationalization of research in Germany. The Sofja Kovalevskaja Award, financed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, is being granted by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation for the third time.
