Supermassive black holes are millions of times more massive than the Sun, making them true giants of the Universe. They are found at the centre of almost all galaxies and, because of their size, influence the evolution of their entire home galaxy. However, how they form is still largely unknown. In this talk, Cédric Jockel explains what we know about these fascinating objects and what questions remain unanswered. In particular, the James Webb Space Telescope has enabled us to learn a great deal about these black holes in recent years.
