Schwarze Löcher und kosmische Kollisionen: Das Universum mit allen Sinnen entdecken
For centuries, astronomy was based on measuring light at various wavelengths. Dark objects, such as black holes, remain largely hidden from telescopes. Since 2015, however, there has been a completely new way to unlock the dark secrets of the Universe: gravitational waves.
For centuries, astronomy was based on measuring light at various wavelengths. Dark objects, such as black holes, remain largely hidden from telescopes. Since 2015, however, there has been a completely new way to unlock the dark secrets of the Universe: gravitational waves. These waves in space and time are caused by the most violent collisions in the known Universe, and yet they are detectable on Earth only with the most sensitive measuring instruments. They provide information about the mergers of binary black holes or neutron stars. Nearly one hundred such mergers have been discovered so far. The talk will explain how to decode these “sounds of the universe” and what they tell us about the composition and evolution of the universe.
