QuantumFrontiers

AEI participates in the Cluster of Excellence

QuantumFrontiers merges quantum metrology and nanometrology in order to advance to the next level of unprecedented sensitivity and precision, and to push the bounds of knowledge at the largest and smallest dimensions: from gravitational-wave astronomy to the manipulation of light and matter on the quantum level.

At QuantumFrontiers, the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (Albert Einstein Institute) and the Institute for Gravitational Physics at Leibniz University Hannover develop laser interferometry at the quantum limit and beyond. For this goal, it connects with its partner institutions in Research Units (RU) and Topical Group (TG) to create a unique environment of infrastructure and expertise in the region Hannover-Braunschweig. With the Laser Interferometry and Gravitational Wave Astronomy department, research groups on Lasers and Squeezed Light and Quantum Control and access to GEO600 and the 10 m Prototype the AEI takes part in most of the widespanning activities of the Cluster of Excellence.

Research Units – pillars of excellence

The Research Units (RU) are the foundation of the scientific work of QuantumFrontiers. They determine the central objectives of the cluster. From the eleven RUs of QuantumFrontiers, the AEI participates in eight, leading two.

Topical Groups – connecting the cluster

The Topical Groups are the more flexible equivalent of the Research Units. They give freshly found synergies between the different groups and institutions a place to grow, creating thereby new impulses for the development of QuantumFrontiers. From the twenty-four Topical Groups of QuantumFrontiers, the AEI takes part at nine, leading six.
