The Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (Albert Einstein Institute) in Hannover, Germany, is inviting applications from highly motivated students for a student assistant position (wissenschaftliche Hilfskraft) in the research group of the AEI 10 m Prototype.
The Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (Albert Einstein Institute/AEI) is one of the world’s leading research centres for gravitational physics. The AEI 10 m Prototype is a facility for developing and testing new technologies for current and future generations of ground-based gravitational wave detectors. This facility will operate the “Sub-SQL Interferometer”, an ultra-sensitive gravitational-wave-detector-like interferometer designed to be limited by quantum noise. This will enable investigations into novel techniques to overcome the standard quantum limit (SQL) of interferometry. Other topics include advanced seismic isolation, precision optics, and control schemes. We are seeking a student assistant (wissenschaftliche Hilfskraft) to provide support with the mechanical design and construction of components for experiments, creating technical drawings, and ordering the designed components. Specifically, the successful applicant can expect to work on tasks related to seismically isolated suspended optics. In addition, tasks will be assigned to provide general assistance in the laboratory, such as characterization of optical components, testing and development of optical sensors, and preparing components for use in ultra-high vacuum environments. The working hours can be expected to be between 5 and 8 hours per week.

- Education: registered student at Leibniz Universität Hannover currently studying mechanical engineering, mechatronics, or a related field
- Personality: highly motived, willingness to learn, and able to work effectively both independently and in a team
- Skills: experience with mechanical design, including the use of CAD software to create technical drawings
- Language: strong writing and speaking skills in both English and German
