Strong stage victory in the Excellence Initiative

Two research proposals led by Leibniz Universität Hannover and to projects the University is involved in, have cleared the first hurdle in the German Excellence Initiative

September 29, 2017

The pre-prosals for the projects QuantumFrontiers (Light and Matter at the Quantum Frontier: Foundations and Applications in Metrology), spokespersons: Prof. Dr. Karsten Danzmann, Prof. Dr. Piet O. Schmidt, Prof. Dr. Andreas Waag, and Phoenix-D (Photonics, Optics, and Engineering Innovation – Across Disciplines), spokespersons: Prof. Dr. Uwe Morgner, Prof. Dr. Ludger Overmeyer, Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Kowalsky, have been asked to submit full proposals today and therefore have a chance to become Clusters of Excellence and receive funding from 1st of January 2019.

QuantumFrontiers (Sprecher: Prof. Dr. Karsten Danzmann, Prof. Dr. Piet O. Schmidt, Prof. Dr. Andreas Waag)

Light and matter at the quantum frontier: The scientists of the research project work on new measurement technologies at the nano level. Physical fundamental units such as mass, length and time shall get more precise at this extremely small scale. Quantum mechanical effects will be used to improve measurement precision. Experts from different areas of physics, astronomy, geodesy and geoinformatics, semiconductor research, circuitry and integrated systems collaborate here. The fundamental research shall be the foundation for many different innovations, e.g., for improved earth observation and navigation. New developments of materials on the nano level shall become possible, just like progress in semiconductor technology, which are central component of almost all electronic devices.

Contributors to QuantumFrontiers are the Leibniz Universität Hannover, the TU Braunschweig, the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt in Braunschweig, the Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V., the Zentrum für angewandte Raumfahrttechnologie und Mikrogravitation (ZARM) in Bremen, and the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (Albert Einstein Institute) in Hannover.
