ERC-funded PhD position in “Mathematics of Scattering Amplitudes” at the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics in Potsdam

Stellenangebot vom 21. November 2024

The Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (Albert Einstein Institute, AEI) in Potsdam, Germany, announces the opening of a PhD position. We are particularly interested in hiring creative, proactive and motivated candidates who flourish at working in a vibrant, interdisciplinary and synergistic group. Successful candidates will join the research group “Symmetries in Gravity and Amplitudes” with the Quantum Gravity and Unified Theories division of the AEI in Potsdam.

The position is associated with the ERC Synergy Grant “Mathematics of Scattering Amplitudes” that comprises research groups around the four Principal Investigators of the grant: Axel Kleinschmidt (AEI Potsdam) along with Ruth Britto (Trinity College Dublin), Francis Brown (University of Oxford) and Oliver Schlotterer (Uppsala University). Successful applicants will be expected to engage actively in the joint research activities of the project.

The Ph.D. research will focus on mathematical structures of scattering amplitudes, more specifically amplitudes associated with Riemann surfaces as they appear in string theory.

The successful applicant will conduct their research projects at the AEI in Potsdam, and they will have to enrol and receive their Ph.D. degree from the Humboldt University in Berlin. The expected duration of the PhD is three to four years. Applicants are required to have a Master degree by the start of the PhD program.

As a student you will also be affiliated with the International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) “Gravity at the Extreme: from Theory to Observation”, a joint doctoral programme comprised of the scientific departments and groups of the AEI at its locations in Potsdam and Hannover, and research groups at the University of Potsdam, the Humboldt University in Berlin, the Leibniz University in Hannover, and the University of Maryland. Our graduate students are exposed to a variety of research topics and have access to a world-wide research network. For an overview of the IMPRS, its research groups, and the application procedure, please visit the IMPRS website.

We offer you a responsible and multifaceted job in an international working environment, extensive opportunities for further education, and an excellent working atmosphere in a friendly and committed team. Flexible working hours and the compatibility of career are of course an important matter for us.
Remuneration and social benefits are based on the public service collective agreement (TVöD).  A projection of the gross and net salary based on the TVöD regulations will be prepared in case an offer is made. Additional support for conferences and professional development is available.

We value diversity and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of gender, nationality, ethnic background, origin, religion and ideology, age, sexual orientation and identity (Code of Conduct). The Max Planck Society is committed to increasing the number of individuals with disabilities in its workforce and therefore encourages applications from such qualified individuals.

The institute promotes a healthy work-life balance by offering all employees a family support service, cooperation with a nearby international kindergarten, as well as an in-house parent-child office and nursing room.

The AEI is a leading research institute in gravitational physics and successful applicants will be part of a vibrant community of researchers. The excellent working environment offers various on-campus support (computing facilities, language courses, residence permit and visa support, children’s day care, etc.). The AEI is located just 30 minutes from the city center of Berlin.

In order to apply, please fill in this form.

You will be asked to upload a cover letter, curriculum vitae, university transcripts, a statement of research interests (no more than three pages) and a list of publications (if applicable). Applicants also need to indicate the names of two referees for recommendation letters.  Please register an account with our job portal and fill in the contact information for the referees well before the deadline, so that reference letters can be received in time. Referees will receive an email with instructions on how to upload their letters. In case of technical problems with the application form, please contact jobs@aei.mpg.de.
