The Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (Albert Einstein Institute) in Hannover, Germany, is looking for VHDL Expert with laser interferometry background d/f/m.

Our research
The open position are in the ‘Precision Interferometry and Fundamental Interactions’ group, led by Prof. Guido Müller. This group played a major role in providing key laser technologies for the current generation of gravitational wave detectors. Those technologies enabled the first direct detection of a gravitational wave, awarded the Nobel prize in 2017. This group is now working on realizing the first gravitational wave observatory in space, LISA, and develop technologies for future gravitational wave observatories beyond LISA.

Your profile
The ideal candidate has a PhD in optical engineering or physics and at least 3 years of relevant experience. Experience working with lasers, optics, interferometry, analog and digital electronic including VHDL programming of FPGAs is a necessity. The candidate needs to be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing in English.

We offer
This is a leading position in the area of laser interferometry using FPGA based phase measurement devices and electronic delay lines. The candidate is expected to work initially with the LISA phasemeter team at the AEI to develop and test the LISA phasemeter. The candidate should also represent the LISA phasemeter team at project reviews and other project relevant meetings with partner institutions, industry, ESA and DLR. The candidate is also expected to set up electronic phase delay lines which measure and delay the phase noise of laser fields and allow to add time varying Doppler shifts, gravitational waves, and expected instrumental artifacts into the delay lines to generate LISA like signals. The candidate is also expected to work with the scientists, postdocs, and graduate students to use these LISA-like signals to extract gravitational waves using Time Delay Interferometry. Payment is according of the pay scale of public services in Germany TVöD Bund E13. The Max Planck Society is committed to employing more severely disabled people.
