Research in the Quantum Control group focuses mainly on the stabilisation of optical systems exhibiting noise at or below the quantum level.
The Quantum Control group at the AEI Hannover was founded in July 2010, as a Junior Research Group within the Centre of Excellence QUEST (Centre for Quantum Engineering and Space-Time Research) of the Leibniz Universität Hannover (LUH). We are working on complex systems exhibiting noise at or below the quantum limit.
Our research topics encompass sources of non-classical light at high frequencies, modern control of suspended test masses for gravitational wave detection, and the investigation of coherent quantum noise cancellation in optomechanical experiments (such as interferometric gravitational wave detectors).
What is common to these seemingly diverse areas of research is that they all aim at reducing or eliminating the effect of (quantum) noise in complex (quantum optical) systems – the most pressing challenge in future laser interferometers for the first-ever direct detection of gravitational waves.
