Against a starry background stand the Earth, a satellite (labeled “LISA Pathfinder”) and a laser triangle (labeled “LISA”).
LISA Pathfinder paved the way for measuring gravitational waves in space.
Ten years ago, the LISA Pathfinder satellite was launched. On board: a laser, two golden cubes, and many sophisticated sensors. Among other things, we wanted to test whether we could measure the perfect, undisturbed free fall of the cubes in space – a crucial prerequisite for LISA, the ESA mission to observe gravitational waves in space. LISA Pathfinder was a huge success, an important milestone on the road to LISA, and continues to help us build the mission today.
