Data Analysis for the Laser Ranging Interferometer on GRACE Follow-On (BSc or MSc thesis)

The GRACE Follow-On satellites were launched on 22nd of May 2018 into space. The spacecraft accommodate the novel Laser Ranging Interferometer (LRI),  which was developed by NASA/JPL and AEI Hannover together with industrial partners. It is the first inter-satellite laser interferometer in space, designed to measure distance variations between the orbiters with nanometer precision.

In order to support us in monitoring the LRI health and in analyzing the LRI data, we are seeking students interested in data analysis. The students will learn about laser interferometry, space technology and data analysis techniques. The work will very likely comprise several small tasks, which will be assigned when the student starts based on urgency or priority.

The data analysis should be performed with MATLAB®, thus, the applicants should have at least some basic programming knowledge.

The thesis can be written in German or English language, although we recommend to use English, which is a great opportunity for students to improve their language skills.

This project is reserved for students affiliated with the Leibniz Universität Hannover.
