Our division plays the leading role in the development of the space-based gravitational-wave detector LISA (Laser Interferometer Space Antenna). The division is a major player in the LISA Pathfinder mission, which successfully tested key technologies for LISA from 2015 until 2017. LISA technology also flies onboard the GRACE Follow-On mission, which will observe climate change trough changes in the Earth's gravitational field.
LISA technology is now being used for Earth observation and will improve future satellite geodesy missions. GRACE Follow-On will observe the critical indicators of climate change through changes in Earth's gravitational field. The mission successfully launched into Earth orbit on the 22nd of May 2018 from Vandenberg, California. First observational were received in the summer of 2018.
LISA (evolved Laser Interferometer Space Antenna), a space-based detector with million-kilometer long arms will detect low-frequency gravitational waves that cannot be measured by ground based gravitational wave detectors.
LISA Pathfinder was a test mission of the European Space Agency ESA for the LISA mission. LISA Pathfinder demonstrated central LISA technologies with which the first gravitational wave observatory in space will observe low-frequency gravitational waves. [more]
