Vinzenz Aubry will become Artist-in-Residence

Aubry will work on “Embodied Cinema: Vibrations for Androids III”.

The Berlin-based artist was selected through a joint call for proposals by the Astrophysical and Cosmological Relativity department at the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics in the Potsdam Science Park and the Center of Gravity at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen.

Starting this fall, Aubry will be artist-in-residence at the Astrophysical and Cosmological Relativity department and the Center of Gravity. He will work on his project, “Embodied Cinema: Vibrations for Androids III.” The residency program invites selected artists to spend up to three months exploring and working alongside scientists at the host institutions.

During his residency, Aubry wants to explore forms of knowing beyond the image. Together with the scientists, he wants to investigate how moving matter, time dilation, and other cosmic signals, can be experienced and related to without defaulting to vision. In addition, the artist will expand their research on vibrations towards the cosmic scale and continue developing their practice of embodied cinema, where the body itself simultaneously becomes the instrument, screen and audience

The response to the call exceeded all expectations, attracting hundreds of exciting proposals and making the selection process difficult. Members of the host institutions collaborated with an international jury consisting of visual artists Ana Carvalho, Shea Hembrey, Alexandra Hunts, and Sjoerd Knibbeler—who was an artist-in-residence at the Center of Gravity last year—to screen the proposals.
