Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier presented Professor Huisken with the prestigious award at the recommendation of Minister-President Winfried Kretschmann. Steinmeier stated that Huisken had "rendered outstanding services to science in Germany," had turned down numerous offers of professorships abroad, and, as a dedicated teacher, had trained many leading researchers.
From 2002 to 2013, Huisken was the director of the Geometric Analysis and Gravitation department at the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (Albert Einstein Institute/AEI) in the Potsdam Science Park. In April 2013, he became the director of the Mathematical Research Institute of Oberwolfach and a professor at the University of Tübingen. He remained an external scientific member of the AEI.
