DESCRIPTION:A talk as part of “Cosmic Wednesday”: Gravitational waves a
re a fundamental prediction of Albert Einstein's theory of general relativ
ity. They have been repeatedly measured in recent years and played a centr
al role in the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics. Gravitational waves can be use
d to study the universe in a completely new way\, as we can now also hear
it. Some of the big questions of modern physics and astronomy may be answe
red in the future.\nSpeaker: Sebastian Völkel

modern physics. Inititally developed from thought experiments\, it is now

DESCRIPTION:In 2015\, a new window on the Universe opened with the detectio
n of gravitational waves from the merger of two black holes. LISA will be
the first gravitational-wave observatory in space and will considerably ex
pand our knowledge of the various sources of gravitational waves.\nSpeaker

DESCRIPTION:The LISA observatory will be the first gravitational-wave obser
vatory in space. It will consist of three satellites that form a triangula
r detector with arms 2.5 million kilometres long\, which follows the Earth
as it orbits the Sun. The satellites will act as a giant interferometer t
o measure changes in the distance between the satellites caused by gravita
 tional waves.\nSpeaker: Gudrun Wanner
