The institute is part of an international project working on the first space-born gravitational-wave detector ever built. The LISA data analysis activity for the AEI is centered in Potsdam-Golm.
Although LISA data analysis shares considerable heritage with ground-based analysis, particularly in regard to constructing the template waveforms for binary black holes and binary stars, the actual search methods are very different. The high sensitivity of LISA leads to source confusion, so that the principal challenge is to separate sources rather than dig them out of noise. This is effectively a problem of solving a global linear optimization problem over a huge parameter space, for which there are a host of possible approaches, and AEI scientists have explored several.
